The Mara River Crossings: How the Great Migration Really Works

A river crossing is the moment most people picture when they think of the Great Migration: thousands of wildebeest gathering nervously on the bank, then pouring down into the water in a thundering, dust-and-spray stampede while crocodiles wait below. It is unpredictable, emotional and unforgettable — and seeing one takes a little strategy.

When do the crossings happen?

The herds are usually in and around the Maasai Mara from mid-July to late October, moving back and forth across the Mara River as they follow the rains and fresh grass. There is no timetable — a herd might cross in the morning, the afternoon, or not at all on a given day. Patience is everything.

The main crossing points

• Purungat / Lookout crossings — busiest and most photographed
• Serena crossings — inside the Mara Triangle, often quieter
• Sand River (southern boundary with the Serengeti) — earliest in the season
• Talek River crossings — smaller herds, often overlooked

• Start early and stay out long — crossings can happen any time of day
• Read the herd: watch for the animals massing and moving toward the water
• Position at a known crossing point and wait quietly, not chase
• Stay flexible — move between points as the herds shift with the wind
• Book 3+ days in the Mara so you're not relying on a single lucky morning

A note on patience and respect

Crossings can't be forced or rushed, and the animals come first. We keep a respectful distance, avoid blocking the herds' path to the water, and never crowd a nervous group — the wildebeest will simply turn back and try again elsewhere if they feel pressured. Often the best sightings come to those who wait quietly in the right place. When it finally happens, you'll understand why people travel across the world for it.
